Who is the course for?
Everyone who has contact with any of the 9 million hearing impaired people in the UK and with a desire to develop an understanding of the issues that impact on their daily lives, at work, leisure and in the family. It will be of particular benefit to service providers and their customer facing staff aiming to comply with DDA legislation through improving access to services, information and public facilities.
What is the course about?
This 10 hour course is designed to help tackle discrimination and create equality of opportunity for hearing impaired people. It will give a greater understanding and awareness of how the issues can be addressed using positive attitudes towards deafness and
the basic skills for communicating with deaf and deaf blind people.
What topics are covered?
The course provides an understanding of how discrimination limits opportunities for deaf people and of the actions that can help to reduce it, including;

Identifying and using appropriate communication tactics and aids to communication with deaf people and an understanding of the benefits and limitations of those aids.

Identifying the different groups of deaf people and their preferred choice of communication and the avoidance of discriminatory actions, terms and language.

What will I achieve and how will I benefit?
By the end of the course learners will have increased their knowledge and understanding of Deaf Awareness and how to use



it to create equality of opportunity for deaf people.
How will I be assessed?
Successful completion of a 20 minute assessment consisting of multiple choice answers will gain a nationally-recognised qualification from CACDP examining board, K101.
What materials do I need?
A folder, notepad and pen. All other materials are provided but other, optional, study aids will be advised by the Tutor.

This qualification, together with Communication Tactics with Deaf & Deaf Blind People T101, forms the requirements for the Developing Awareness and Communication with Deaf and Deaf Blind People (DAC01)
